How to Get Involved in One Health
As GDB students, One Health is the cornerstone of our degree. The One Health approach recognizes the growing connection between the health of animals, people, plants, and the environment. The effects of one group can have major impacts on the health and wellbeing of the others, for better or for worse. When faced with a scenario concerning the health of any of these three groups, we must consider that they do not exist in isolation to understand the full context of the situation. Handling and preventing disease events requires the consideration and coordination of the human, animal, and environmental health sectors.
Now that I’ve piqued your interest in One Health, let me show you some ways that you can get involved in One Health opportunities on campus!
- Explore the One Health Institute Website
The One Health Institute is a UC Davis organization whose mission is to understand and solve the interdisciplinary issues that are impacting the health and conservation of humans, animals, and the environment.
On their website, you can explore the many programs and projects that are housed under OHI. These projects are separated into six categories: Disease Surveillance & Interactions, Disaster Preparedness & Response, Pandemic Intelligence, Workforce Development, Access to Care, and Legacy Projects. Explore the Programs & Projects tab on the OHI website to see which programs are included in each of these categories!
Under the Centers tab on the OHI website, you can explore the many UCD centers that are connected to One Health. A few centers you can explore to get involved in are the California Raptor Center, the UCGHI Center for Planetary Health, the Karen C. Drayer Wildlife Health Center, the EpiCenter for Disease Dynamics, and the OHI Laboratory.
- Join the Students for One Health club!
