Bwindi Community Hospital and Batwa Development Program

The Bwindi Community Hospital and Batwa Development Program were founded by Dr. Scott and Carol Kellermann over twenty years ago. They were asked to perform a medical survey in Bwindi, Uganda
for the indigenous Batwa, who had been forcibly removed from their ancestral home in the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park when it was turned into a gorilla conservation area. Dr. Scott and Carol spent ten years living in Bwindi to better serve the Batwa. Their mission was to address the root causes of poverty to help the Batwa become healthy and be able to meet their needs. Through this service came the establishment of the Bwindi Community Hospital and the Batwa Development Program. The hospital provides free healthcare to all Batwa patients, and has a health insurance program set up to make health care more affordable and accessible to the Bwindi Community. The Batwa Development program's mission is to 'help the Batwa help themselves' through programs that help them access education, healthcare, and teach them skills useful towards making the transition from living in the forest to living an agrarian lifestyle.

If you're interested in volunteering with BCH or the BDP, contact the Kellermann Foundation by emailing volunteer@kellermannfoundation.org, or contact the hospital at bchvolunteering@gmail.com
