December Alumni Spotlight: Bianca Radut

Hi GDB!

I'm a proud GDB alumna from the class of 2020. I was a transfer student from MJC and SJDC and specifically came to UCD because of this amazing major. While at community college, I spent a summer (2017) at University of Michigan doing research with a focus on health disparities in the US, and it completely changed my perspective on healthcare and gave me my first glimpse into public health. After that summer, I was so happy to come into a major that embraced the complexity of health! I came in as a pre-med student, very much set on becoming a doctor, but over my 3 years in GDB, I found myself being more and more drawn towards public health.

I have a long story about how I officially changed routes, but to keep it short, here's a brief history post-graduation: I became the GDB Academic Advisor in 2021 and loved working with the team and serving the students, but really missed the health aspect of it all. So in 2022, I started a Masters of Public Health program online through Loma Linda University because I appreciated their holistic health perspective in individual and population health. In 2023, I started working as a Personal Trainer while finishing my MPH, and I loved serving my community in a very hands-on role! Earlier this year, I started working for a Federally Qualified Health Center in Esparto, CA called Winters Healthcare Foundation, serving our rural population in Yolo County. I am so proud to be working for an organization that stands for community and excellence of care. My role is a perfect combination of individual care through health coaching and population health as I oversee preventive care for our Esparto population. It was a twisty road, but I'm so happy it has led me here.

I have endless gratitude for this amazing GDB program and the people in it, and I wish you all the very best in your academic careers! If you'd like to reach out, please ask the GDB team to put you in contact with me, I'd love to chat!
