February Alumni Spotlight: Jocelyn Kirley

Hello! My name is Jocelyn Kirley and I graduated from UC Davis in 2019 with my BS in Global Disease Biology. As an incoming freshman in 2015, I was immediately drawn to the One Health model that guides the program and allowed me to put my passions of human health and social justice together. I worked with Dr. Theresa Keegan to complete my senior practicum project that studied the impact of health insurance status on cancer survival in the adolescent and young adult population.

After graduation, I worked at Kaiser Permanente in the Division of Research as a Research Associate for 4.5 years. There, I had the opportunity to become a published author and work on several NIH funded studies with the brilliant Dr. Elizabeth Feliciano, primarily focusing on cancer outcomes, cardiometabolic health, and body composition. In 2022, I decided to go back to school to pursue a new career in nursing and started the ABSN program at CSU San Marcos. I fell in love with critical care and now work as a Registered Nurse in an Intensive Care Unit in the San Diego area. My background with GDB and public health research helped me immensely in this journey and allows me to have a broader perspective on patient care and health.

Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions about working in research or nursing!
