GDB Alumni Spotlight, April 2022: Austin Dalmasso

Happy Spring! I'm Austin, a current MPH candidate at the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University with a certificate in History, Ethics, and Law (I'm graduating soon, hire me!). I did my master's practicum at the Glynwood Center for Regional Food and Farming in Cold Sprong, NY. where I worked on the project Establishing an Employer-Sponsored Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) Voucher Program in the Hudson Valley to Assess Member Health Outcomes and recently turned in my thesis: Is There Power in a Union?: Examining the Relationship Between Labor Unionization, Worker Health, and Public Health in the United States. I started Davis as a GDB student in 2016 and as the years went on added dual minors in Public Health Sciences and Human Rights Studies. While an undergrad, the GDB program opened numerous doors for me academically, professionally, and even socially.

I worked as a GDB Peer Advisor (fun fact: I made the major website) and my connections with peers and the advising staff allowed me to build a robust support network. This major is unique and I encourage anyone to take full advantage of the resources at your disposal. Additionally, I worked as a Co-Director for Joan Viteri Memorial Clinic where we aimed to provide ethical, compassionate, and non-biased care to a patient population of some of the most systematically vulnerable members of our Sacramento community. In addition, I served on both the Chancellor's Undergraduate and Student Health Advisory Boards and in both roles was able to more formally see the necessity of collaboration and communication in improving the student experience. There are so many opportunities at Davis that even while I'm in New York I miss that place! Talk to your advisors, talk to your peers, and enjoy the ride...the years go by quicker than they seem!

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions! (a.dalmasso@columbia.edu)
