GDB Alumni Spotlight, October 2023: Obinna Okechukwu Nduka

Our October 2023 Alumni Spotlight highlights Obinna Okechukwu Nduka; read more about Obinna and his GDB journey below:

"My name is Obinna Nduka and currently, I am a 1st-year medical student (MS-1) at the University California Davis School of Medicine (UCDSOM). I graduated from undergrad at UCD in 2020 with a GDB degree. During my time in undergrad, I was a part of the Imani clinic, a student-run clinic that aimed to medically aid the underserved population of Oak Park in Sacramento. Additionally, I conducted research under the plant and physiology department and focused on the socio-economic factors that expose African and Middle Eastern mothers to specific plant toxins. All of my efforts, although a bit different, were unified under the concept of One Health that was emphasized in all of my GDB courses. To me, Global Disease Biology means appreciating the diversity of different sectors and viewing how different sectors within a community can positively impact said community.

Currently, I am planning to join the Global Health tract at my medical school, given that GDB informed me about visualizing health at global levels. Additionally, I am working on a weight loss documentary to empower those struggling with weight. Being informed by One Health, I am aiming to discuss the surrounding barriers that might affect one's success at losing weight. I am very excited for the documentary to offer guidance and reassurance to those who might need it."
