October Student of the Month: Shayla Campbell

Hey Hey! I’m Shayla Campbell; a third-year GDB student from Beaumont, California. A core part of my identity comes from the strong Black Jamaican Women in my life, whose support and resilience inspire me daily. They are the reason I aspire to pursue medicine, specifically to advocate for and provide reproductive and sexual healthcare to underserved communities that are often overworked and overlooked.

With such goals in mind, UCD has offered me many opportunities that I am blessed to partake in! I tutor MAT 17ABC through AATC, work as a student research assistant in Dr. Chambers Butcher’s lab, and volunteer at Knights Landing One Health Center, one of the best student-run clinics on campus. From guest speakers to its restricted electives, GDB introduced me to the multi-perspective One Health approach while broadening my understanding of public health and medicine. After graduation, I plan to attend medical school, and the GDB program continues to be a crucial part of preparing me to serve and uplift the communities that mean so much to me.
