June SOM

June Student of the Month: Joey Nguyen

My name is Joey, and I am a 3rd year GDB major. I came into UC Davis as a Wildlife, Fish, and Conservation Biology major, but discovered my interest in epidemiology and switching to GDB has been one of the best decisions I've made! GDB allows me to incorporate my passions for wildlife, human health, and biostatistics into my restricted electives, and the major-specific classes all have excellent professors from a wide-array of health professions. It's interesting to come into GDB classes and meet people who are all on different pre-health tracks, and everyone brings unique perspectives to group assignments. GDB is truly one of the most supportive majors at UC Davis, both in the collaborative spirit of its students and the incredible advising team.

Through GDB, I've been able to hear about different research positions and internships, and my current position as an undergraduate researcher at the UC Davis Veterinary School came from a GDB advising email. During my time as a GDB major, I've been able to conduct research in a number of different labs, and also have had the opportunity to present my research at the GDB research conference! After graduation, I plan on applying to pharmacy school or veterinary school, focusing on either infectious diseases or critical care in either field. GDB has widened my perspective on health, and its focus on One Health allows me to tailor my education, and senior practicum, towards my personal interests.
