June 2022 GDB Student of the Month : Evelyn Alvarez
Evelyn is a fifth-year undergraduate pursuing a Bachelor's of Science in Global Disease Biology. She is the biological lead for the 3D Organic Polymer Silk team (3D-OPS), which is developing a method to utilize spider silk as a bio-ink in medical 3D printing. The team is actively investigating synthetic protein creation and mechanical extrusion printing methods. The findings of this groundbreaking study have the potential to make healthcare treatments for damage rehabilitation more affordable and efficient for everyone. Evelyn is a first-generation Latina who makes up less than 2% of Hispanic/Latin women in STEM fields.
Evelyn chose Global Disease Biology as her preferred major at UC Davis because she was inquisitive about global health issues. Her first ambition was to get into medical school and become an Internal Medicine doctor. Soon after beginning the GDB curriculum, she discovered her true purpose was to use a One Health approach to correct inequities and improve health in low-income underprivileged areas. GDB has provided Evelyn additional insight into representing individuals whose voices have been silenced due to unfairness, as well as raising awareness of the healthcare system's shaky base. Global Disease Biology, to her, entails the collaboration of a diverse workforce to understand the science behind disease discoveries, causes, evolution, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention. Evelyn plans to continue her study with 3D-OPS after graduation, with the goal of earning her M.D. Ph.D.
