December 2022 Student of the Month: Robert Chin

My name is Robert Chin and I am currently in my fourth year majoring in Global Disease Biology. I am nearing the end of my term as president for the only pre-medical professional fraternity here on campus, Phi Delta Epsilon. I am also a clinic intern for Bayanihan Clinic, one of UC Davis’ seven student run clinics. Bayanihan Clinic’s primary goal is to provide preventative and primary health care services to Filipino War Veterans and other underserved communities within Sacramento. In addition, I am currently the coordinator for the Diabetes Empowerment Program Specialty Clinic associated with Bayanihan which aims to provide educational and diabetes management services to those with diabetes or at risk for diabetes. Furthermore I am part of the SHARE Lab as an undergraduate research assistant, while working on my practicum with Dr. Meng Huo.

I still remember learning about the GDB major from my girlfriend and I was instantly intrigued by the amazing intersectionality of public health, medicine, and general STEM courses. I found it extremely impactful, especially during the quarter when I finally transferred into the major, the beginning of the COVID-19 Epidemic. Furthermore, I believe one of the most unique qualities is the ability to work on the GDB Practicum and get a sense of research literature and working with researchers. Working with Dr. Huo has given me an amazing perspective and knowledge regarding the realm of research, while also offering an amazing opportunity to work on research that interests me and be part of projects that can have real world implications. Once I graduate this Spring Quarter, I hope to take a Gap Year as I begin applying to medical schools. I understand this is a daunting moment of my life, but I know that I will be considering everything I learned within this major, both during my personal statements and hopefully interviews. The GDB major has taught me so much relevant information regarding the real world, society, public health, and medicine that I know will be impactful as I continue pursuing a career in medicine.
